A contractor has been hired to clean up the living conditions at a downtown Kitchener apartment.

The owner of 48 Weber Street West has been notified they can’t allow anyone on the property until they’ve dealt with the sanitary conditions and update the property standards as laid out by the City of Kitchener.

The contractor was hired by the owner. Shayne Turner the Director of Bylaw Enforcement with the City of Kitchener tells 570 News the next step is in the hand of the landlord.

“They can decide what they want to do with the building. They can refurbish it, sell it or leave it vacant.” Turner adds the city knows knows the deficiencies that need to be fixed.

Turner says in the 15 years he’s been with the City of Kitchener there have only been up to 3 serious complaints of landlords that resulted in the city becoming involved.

He says the city becomes involved after receiving complaints from a tenant.

The city will issue orders that hopefully are taken care of by the landlord. If that doesn’t happen the city can take the landlord to court, or do the repairs and add the cost to the property tax bill.
