Oil spill in Mimico Creek threatens ducks

An oil spill is threatening Toronto’s ducks.

Toronto Wildlife sent a rescue team to Mimico Creek on Tuesday morning after several ducks were seen coated in a thick, black substance.

Toronto Fire says it is mineral oil, which is not toxic but could damage the ducks’ feathers.

The ducks will be cleaned with dish soap at the Toronto Wildlife Centre and then released.

A crash at Highway 401 and Highway 427 on Monday night flooded the highway with oil. Ontario Provincial Police initially said the spill was contained but Toronto Fire confirmed the mineral oil could be traced back to the crash.

Oil from three transformers, a total of 9000 litres of oil, was being transported on the truck. The oil has now been seen as far as south of Bloor Street.

Fire crews have also seen oil at Humber Bay Park, where Mimico Creek spills into Lake Ontario.

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has also been called in.
