Cost of parking may be going up in Waterloo

The cost to park in Waterloo could be going up if councilors go forward with a plan to recover the full cost from drivers.

Council has hired a consultant to study parking to help determine if it should be an enterprise service paid for solely by users.

Ward 1 Councillor Bob Mavin spoke with 570 News.

“Right now we charge for permits and we have free parking for a couple of hours in the Uptown, but the reality is, is that what we want to do in the future? That’s the type of thing we’ll be discussing once we get the information and that will include knowing what the cost of providing that service is.”

He adds they will be consulting businesses and the public on what direction to take.

“I think everyone in Waterloo at some point comes to the Uptown and they become a part of the public using the parking facilities.”

Hourly parking has jumped from $2.25 an hour in 2010, to $2.75 or $3.25 for some spaces.

It costs around $1.3 million for the city’s parking and enforcement, and $1.5 million is budgeted for upgrades and parking expansions.
