OPP reminding drivers to be safe this Canada Day

June saw a high death toll on Ontario highways and the OPP say it needs to stop now.

After 28 casualties this month, police have launched a Canada Day week initiative to remind people to drive safely during the busy holiday.

OPP Constable Kerry Schmidt tells 570 News’s Eric Drozd the message they are trying to get across is that collisions are almost always caused by the same factors.

Impaired driving, aggressive and distracted driving, and lack of seatbelt use.

“All these factors are so preventable, it doesn’t need to be like this. People listen to the message, and I don’t think there is anyone who is listening who doesn’t agree with that message, but they all think that message is targeted to someone else other than themselves.”

Schmidt is urging drivers to learn from these tragic deaths now rather than waiting for a potential accident to develop an understanding of the importance of driver safety.
