Regional Council still deciding how to replace former councilor Wayne Wettlaufer

Regional Council are left with the task of dealing with a vacant seat after former councilor Wayne Wettlaufer passed away two weeks ago.

Reports suggest the seat will be officially declared vacant on August 19th, and after that council will have 60 days to decide how to fill it.

Zachary Spicer at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Institute of Public Opinion and Policy says the interesting part is there are no real rules on how that should be done.

“We there’s not formal stipulation saying council has to appoint someone in this way, they lay out a spectrum of options that are somewhat restricted, but it gives council a bit of room in how they want to best proceed.”

Options include appointing someone, calling for applications for the position, or a by-election.
