An arbitration ruling means the City of Kitchener will have to pay some top ranking fire officials more.
The ruling states the Chief must make 20% more then a Platoon Chief while Deputy Chiefs need to earn 10% more.
Michael Goldrup is Director of Human Resources with the City and was a guest on the Eric Drozd show and says arbitration rulings don’t take into account a city’s ability to pay.
Goldrup says the city is working with the association of municipalities of Ontario to push the province to review the arbitration’s system.
“It is causing a pressure on municipalities who have to look to fund higher settlements then any other union that works, that exists at the city.”
He says for example firefighters received a raise this year of 2.7-3% while other unionized staff received a 1.35% raise.
