Guelph Police warn of phone scam

A phone scam preying on immigrants has Guelph Police warning people to be on guard.

The phoney callers pretend to be from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, and they threaten to make an arrest if the victim doesn’t pay an outstanding debt in their native country.

“Usually what they’re asking the person to do is either transfer money through an electric money transfer,” says Constable Katherine Hammond, “or deposit money through a specific bank account they’ve provided that’s usually a fraudulent account.”

Hammond says once a transfer is made, the money is virtually untraceable.

If you have responded to a fraudulent communication and have become a victim of fraud, Guelph Police asks that you contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by email at info@antifraudcentre.ca or call 1-888-495-8501.
