Over 100 people rally at Toyota’s Cambridge plant as union efforts ramp up

Unifor supporters are marching to the Cambridge Toyota gates on Saturday for a rally as union efforts ramp up.

Around 130 were there including the president of the Canadian Labour Congress, Hassan Yussuff.

Last month the auto-maker announced it would be moving production of the Corolla to Mexico.

570’s Lisa Drew was at the rally, she spoke to Unifor President Jerry Dias.

“The key issue is: people are realizing they have absolutely no rights. What is going to happen to them? Toyota is saying there isn’t going to be any layoffs but we cant predict the future. Toyota needs to come out and say ‘this is the product, this is the amount of jobs its going to create, don’t worry about it’ but they are not saying that at all.”

President and CEO of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce Greg Durocher says the decision to move the Corrola comes down to what is best for the company.

“I think it’s an unemotional decision based on facts, and figures and the math. And that’s the decision that companies largely make.”

Unifor members from other plants in Canada have visited both Cambridge and Woodstock in recent weeks to help restart union talks.
