Federal government removing ‘tampon tax’ July 1

The federal portion of the tax on feminine hygiene products will be removed as of July 1.
The Conservative government gave notices of the move Thursday.
It follows the House of Commons unanimously adopting a motion calling for the change earlier this month.
The NDP-led proposal was prompted by an online petition campaign begun earlier this year that saw over 70,000 people call for the change.
Removing the tax has been estimated to cost the government $33 million.
Though the Conservatives supported the motion, they had originally said the matter would be dealt with in a future budget.
