An announcement by a Guelph Principal has sparked “slut shaming” debate

An announcement by a Guelph Principal has sparked a “slut shaming” debate at an area high school.

Centennial C.V.I. principal Scot Bishop reportedly announced to students that they should follow the dress code and dress “scholarly, not skanky”

Spokesperson for the Upper Grand District School, Maggie McFadzen says he has since apologized, and in one email wrote that he will send better messages with neutral language in the future.

The apology wasn’t enough for some students.

Many plan to protest the language used by the principal by coming to school tomorrow in clothing that violates the dress code.

McFadzen says they are aware of this protest.

“They have a right to protest, I don’t think we would be suspending the children that come to the protest, but we have asked them to wear appropriate clothes.”

McFadzen says the school’s dress code includes:

  • Clothes that are neat and clean
  • No spaghetti straps, backless tops, tops with bare midriffs, strapless tops, low cut tops or muscle tops
  • Tops can be no lower than top of the armpit
  • All clothes are free from symbols of hate, gang membership or images that portray violence, death, abuse, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, racial slurs, obscene words, political or sexual statements
  • All dresses, skirts, and hem lines must be midway between hip and knee
  • Undergarments are not visible
  • Hats not worn in main office and removed if teacher requests it
  • Students must wear acceptable footwear for health and safety reasons
  • No bandanas or doo rags

Overall, McFadzen agrees that the comment was inappropriate.
