It seems there’s more when it comes to the instability of the former Mayfair Hotel in downtown Kitchener.
City staff say the wall the building shares with 156-158 King St could cause the neighbouring building to collapse as well and both buildings need to come down together and as soon as possible.
Three independent engineers have found that supporting and fixing 156-158 King Street is a complex process that would take several weeks before demolition of the former Mayfair Hotel could even start, which will leave both buildings vulnerable to an unplanned collapse.
Meanwhile, City Councillor Zyg Janecki tells The Eric Drozd Show he wants to preserve the 110 year old building.
“A lot of communities and towns, whether it’s Cambridge where we have a lot of historic buildings, that are just normal, turn of the century, we have the same thing. Why can’t we preserve what we have? That is the essence of it.”
At this time something as simple as heavy rain storms or high winds could cause the former Mayfair Hotel to collapse and therefore cause the neighbouring building to collapse as well.
