Second control zone to battle avian flu includes some of Waterloo Region

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has expanded it’s quarantine zone to include part of Waterloo Region.

This comes after avian flu was confirmed on a second Oxford County farm.

The exact locations of the two farms dealing with confirmed cases are not known, but the CFIA has ordered a quarantine for all poultry farms within 10 kilometres of the two locations.

The CFIA will continue to monitor the additional quarantined premises closely for any signs of disease.

Farmers affected by the quarantine will be allowed to sell their birds, but in order to do so, they need to test them to ensure they do not have the virus.

The CFI says they’ve done scientific testing to confirm the sequence of the H5N2 strain is the same one that has been detected in British Columbia. The virus is also similar to the strain isolated in Washington State, U.S.

Officials remind the public the virus does not pose a threat to food safety when poultry and poultry products are properly handled and cooked.
