Former Mayfair Hotel to be demolished as council votes to remove heritage protection

Kitchener’s former Mayfair Hotel will be demolished.

In a special council meeting on Thursday afternoon heritage protection on the property was removed, which will allow for the building to be destroyed.

“It is unfortunate that the city of Kitchener will lose a building of heritage significance” says Mike Seiling, Director of Kitchener Building Division. “Weighing the safety for the people that would have to work inside the building and the people who would have to work outside the building, safety is paramount in this case.”

The city is currently awaiting an engineer’s report to determine exactly how the building will be demolished.

Once they receive the engineer’s report, Seiling says they will review it, and then issue the demolition permit. The demolition contract would arrive on site, and then begin demolition.
