Possible high school teachers strike in Waterloo Region could start first week of May

A teachers’ strike at seven boards including Waterloo Region is looming larger with word that the union representing the province’s public high school teachers has walked away from talks with the government management team.

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation said that after 14 days of bargaining it has reached an impasse.

In a tweet, the OSSTF said it is suspending talks to reconsider its position, and will continue negotiations when the employer “gets serious”.

It’s believed a strike in Waterloo Region could start on May 4th.

An email statement from the local chapter of the OSSTF, Sherry Freund, says local negotiations continue. You can read the entire statement below.

“While Central negotiations have been suspended, Local negotiations continue. I have not yet had confirmation of the receipt of the No Board Report in Waterloo. It may come today, or it may come tomorrow – depends on the mail at this point. At this time we will not be giving interviews locally. Only a board which is in resumption, in conciliation and with a no board report can go on strike, once 17 days have elapsed from the issuance of the report. So, at this time, only the 7 boards in resumption are in that position. Additional boards would have to be placed in resumption before they could be in a strike position. Since we do not yet have the No Board Report locally, we cannot give you an exact earliest date for local high schools to be on strike.”
