Cambridge to revisit possible sportsplex deal with Conestoga in two weeks

The possibility of a partnership between the City of Cambridge and Conestoga College will once again be up for discussion after council heard from a number of citizens who voiced their concerns.

While they weren’t opposed to the idea itself, most simply wanted more information about the partnership.

A special council meeting took place Thursday night, where many Cambridge residents stated they require more clarification in the areas such as transportation, costs and access to the facilities.

Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig tells 570 News that revisiting the idea will allow them to do so.

The deferral means that more people are going to have more time to understand all the facts so they can come back if they wish to make further comment on the proposed location.

If approved, council says that the public will be kept in the loop of any developments and they will continue to be able to provide their input.

Task force chair of the sports complex Frank Monteiro says that if the partnership is not approved, it would take up to eight years before finding a new location and so they need to “strike while the iron is hot.”

The costs will double. You know that everything goes up every year. Right now we are talking $53 million. It could be more, it could be less, so think about it.”

Whether or not to build the facility on Fountain Street, south of the 401 will be further discussed in a council meeting on April 28th.
