City of Guelph tackles illegal donation boxes

Your Spring cleaning may include getting rid of some clothing that you don’t wear anymore and perhaps you’ll be looking to donate some items to charity.

The City of Guelph is asking residents to do their research before dropping off any items.

This comes as many illegal donation boxes are popping up around the city.

These multi-coloured boxes can be found throughout the city, including in residential areas, plazas, and even industrial land.

Ward 5 councillor Leanne Piper tells 570 News that there are well over 100 of these “fake” donation boxes in the city.

“Some of them we were not able to determine at all where [the donations] are going, some of them are bulk sold to distributors, some of them are disposed of.”

By-law officers will now look into ensuring that donation boxes follow three main rules – they have the authority to be on the property, no traffic or safety laws are violated and a way of contacting the owner of the box is readily available.

Council will review the updated by-law later this year.
