Carbon monoxide detectors now mandatory for residential buildings

The Ontario Fire Code was adjusted last October, making CO alarms mandatory for residential buildings.

Starting today all single family homes, and multiple unit buildings with six or less units must have a carbon monoxide detector on any floor where people sleep.

John Percy, the Public Education Officer for the City of Waterloo Fire Department says you could be facing a hefty fine if you do not have one installed.

“The local fire departments do have the right to come in, inspect, and enforce the Ontario Fire Code and issue a ticket for $295 or they can take you to a court of law and ask for a fine of $50,000.”

Residential buildings with more than six units will have until October 15th to install detectors in the buildings main furnace room, the apartment beside the furnace room and the apartment above it.

Often called “The Silent Killer” because you cannot see, taste or smell it, carbon monoxide can enter the blood stream and deprive the brain and heart of much-needed oxygen.

This in turn causes confusion and disorientation, and it means that affected persons often cannot take the necessary action to save their own lives.
