Federal budget date expected to be announced today

It’s expected that the Harper government will unveil the date of its budget on Thursday.

The federal finance minister is scheduled to make an announcement from the Canada Goose Factory, in the Caledonia Road and Eglinton Avenue West area of Toronto at 9 a.m.

When asked about the rumours on Wednesday, Joe Oliver didn’t deny it.

“All I can say is stay tuned,” he said.

The government is hoping the highlight of the fiscal plan will be to balance the books for the first time since the recession.

The conservatives also point to plans to provide income-splitting for parents and changes to child care benefits.

NDP finance critic Nathan Cullen said the conservative balanced budget isn’t exactly the good news.

“It’s how you balance the books – cutting services and funds to veterans, rail safety, food inspection,” Cullin explained. “These guys have been so severe getting to this political agenda that they’ve actually hurt many Canadians and the services we need.”

Normally the fiscal plan is tabled in the House before April but dropping oil prices prompted the minister to delay it.

There have been unconfirmed reports that the budget date will be April 21.
