Staff cuts expected as Grand River Hospital prepares annual budget

Grand River Hospital will be cutting executive and management positions as they look to prepare their 2015/2016 budget.

In a release, Malcolm Maxwell, GRH’s president and CEO says they faced an additional $7.5 million in staff and program costs and need to address the higher costs to sustain care.

He says this includes costs for staffing, benefit costs and higher prices for supplies and drugs.

“What we’ve tried to do though, is hold a number of vacant positions in areas throughout the hospital” says Mark Karjaloto, Director of Communications at GRH. “So the intention was that if someone was going to be directly affected by a layoff, we would give them the option of a choice for another position within the hospital if an appropriate one were to be available.”

24 full time positions out of a total full time staff of just over 2500 will be cut and 45 layoff notices will be handed out as staff is adjusted in each department.
