Parking fines in Kitchener residential areas during special events could go up

It may cost you more if you park illegally during an event in the City of Kitchener.

City councillors discussed doubling the fines for those who park illegally in residential areas surrounding the event.

Shayne Turner with by-Law Enforcement says, a fine right now is around the same cost of parking in a designated area and taking a shuttle, so there is no incentive to take the shuttle.

“What we’re asking council to approve is a process where the existing fines will double,” says Turner. “For example if you park longer than three hours, the fine is $20; that would double to $40. If you’re blocking a sidewalk or blocking a driveway, that [fine] could double from $25 to $50.”

Turner says, the doubling of the fines has nothing to do with their bottom line.

“It’s the opposite,” says Turner. “What we’re hoping to do is, through the messaging around saying we’re going to increase finds, we’re hoping that there will be fewer violations. So, quite frankly, I would be very pleased if we didn’t have to issue one parking ticket during a special event. This is about deterrence before the event even begins.”

Bylaw heard a number of complaints from people living around McLennan Park during Big Music Fest.
