More community development in store for Centre in The Square

The future of Centre in the Square in Kitchener will involve more community development.

Kitchener councillors discussed the future of the performance centre this afternoon. The mandate involves having the facility hosting a wide range of non-profit activities and maximizing its arts and culture involvement.

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic says this option “strikes the necessary balance which puts our residents, our community and our economy first in terms of the Centre in the Square’s future role…the status quo here is not an option. It is also not an option to see any of these organizations fail, and I don’t think anyone needs to fail. We’ve heard from the groups today that there is substantial opportunity here to create new relationships, to build that and to do it in a timely fashion. Now, everybody needs to roll up their sleeves and get done what needs to be done.

Last year the city asked staff to review the centre’s mandate after the facility posted a $1.5 million deficit.
