AUDIO: Canadian radio legend hanging up the headphones this year

An era is coming to an end in local radio.

George Michaels from our sister station, CHYM 96.7, has just announced he will retire later this year.

AUDIO: Listen to George’s announcement

George has been a mainstay on CHYM for 34 years and is one of the country’s longest serving morning men, hosting the CHYM morning show for 31 years.

In fact, he’s a Kitchener boy – born and raised here.

Rogers Kitchener Radio Group General Manager Mike Collins says “George Michaels is one of the most successful morning show hosts in the history of Canadian radio.”

He calls George “the consummate professional” and adds we are going to miss him, but “who can blame a guy for wanting to sleep in after getting up at 2 a.m. for over 31 years.”

As for his future plans, George tells 570 News he is looking forward to retiring to his cottage on Lake Huron.

Michaels turns 60 in April.
