Steve Nash announces retirement from basketball

Everyone from teammates of Steve Nash to B-C’s premier are paying tribute to the basketball star.

The Victoria native announced his retirement yesterday after a 19-year N-B-A career that included two Most Valuable Player awards.

Nash’s announcement wasn’t surprising — the veteran point guard has played in just 65 games over the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers due to injuries.

Back and nerve issues prevented him from hitting the court at all this season.

Premier Christy Clark paid tribute to one of her province’s most celebrated athletes by tweeting that he exemplifies the values of hard work and team spirit.

Lakers teammate Boris Diaw tweeted it was an honour to play with Nash while Toronto Raptors guard Kyle Lowry tweeted it was an honour to play against him.

Nash ranks third in N-B-A history with 10-thousand, 335 assists.
