Local taxi drivers undoubtedly Uber upset

They’re not supporting the idea of the ride share program possibly coming to the region.

It’s not a surprise really, because more options, means less business.

But at last night’s regional council meeting, Uber said it’s service is actually safer than local taxis, because, as representatives put it, it has a more stringent screening process.

Peter Neufeld, President of Waterloo Taxi, and the Waterloo Regional Taxi Alliance, doesn’t agree.

“They didn’t really give an answer why they’re safer. Personally I think we’re far safer than what they provide, because we actually get police record checks. They get a third party to do it. There is no way a third party can have the same access the police or CSIS can have doing in depth background checks.”

“He also said we only go back five years [with our police checks]. We all have to go through a Vulnerable Sector checks which is a life time check,” says Neufeld. “I couldn’t understand how he could say they’re safer when these people they’re hiring, may drive three hours a month.”

“Would you consider somebody who does something three hours a month, very qualified at doing what they do? I wouldn’t.”

He says Uber wants to come in, and force council to amend the bylaws to allow them to service us, and he doesn’t think that’s right.

He also points out, drivers here live in the region, shop in the region, and support the region, while Uber is a company out of San Francisco.
