Kitchener given a “C” when it comes to cycling

Kitchener gets a passing grade in the first report card issued by the city’s cycling advisory committee.

It gives Kitchener a “C”.

Committee Chair Peter Dedes tells 570 News the goal of the committee is to increase ridership every three to five years.

“I think we’re a little bit behind that, part of the issue is likely staffing…Not being able to execute some of the physical things that needed to be completed before specific dates.”

The report found key areas of the city’s cycling policies such as programs and infrastructure come up short.

It also dismisses the notion the cold weather keeps bikes off the roads.

It says about 11 per cent of trips in Minneapolis are by bike.

In Kitchener, that figure is around three per cent.

Dedes says what Minneapolis does well is building segregated infrastructure for cycling and maintaining it throughout the winter.
