Kitchener water and sewer rate increase to address deficit now; aging infrastructure later

Kitchener is still feeling the sting of aging infrastructure, but some help is on the way.

At Monday’s budget meeting, it was announced that so far this year watermain breaks throughout the city have cost $250,000 to fix.

This resulted in a water and sewer increase of 9.9% to help address the matter. Manager of Operations with Kitchener Utilities, Tammer Gaber tells 570 News that the rise simply addresses the backlog.

We ran into a deficit and that 9.9% is to deal with that chronic deficit. It’s not to deal with replacing the root cause, which is all these older mains.”

Gaber says that this is an excellent first step though, as getting out of the deficit will allow for the next step, which is addressing the main issue.
