Ontario premier says new sex ed curriculum online ‘within weeks’

TORONTO – Premier Kathleen Wynne says the government is finished consulting with parents about a proposed new sex ed curriculum and it should be online “within weeks” for public viewing.

Progressive Conservative Monte McNaughton has repeatedly slammed the government over the proposed changes, saying more input from parents is needed.

Wynne says school council chairs at all 5,000 schools across the province have been consulted and the new health and physical education curriculum will be implemented in September 2015.

Wynne said in question period she doesn’t know if McNaughton’s “fearmongering” has more to do with his party leadership bid or “with a very small group of people who want to stir up fear about the reality that kids need information.”

Wynne has said students should start learning facial cues as early as Grade 1 to give them the ability to understand the concept of consent.

The reintroduced sex ed curriculum will teach kids about homosexuality and same-sex marriages in Grade 3, encourage discussions about puberty, including masturbation, in Grade 6, and talk about preventing sexually transmitted diseases in Grade 7, which could include information on oral and anal sex.
