Nearly 3000 community care workers in Ontario on strike

Almost 3000 community care workers in Ontario are on strike.

The work action includes 268 health care workers in Waterloo-Wellington.

It comes after the Ontario Nurses’ Association nine of 10 bargaining units with the province’s Community Care Access Centres voted in favour of the strike.

Lee Griffi with the Waterloo-Wellington Long-Term Care Network Council says wage was a big factor.

“You give your CEOs of the CCACs very large pay raises…that can tend to affect front line staff. In this case, it looks like it has.”

The union says it has been seeking wage increases equal to the percentages given to the other 57,000 members of ONA in the hospital, public health and long-term care sectors

“Shame on these employers for putting Registered Nurses, Health Care Professionals and our patients at risk by forcing us to withdraw our care,” said ONA president Linda Haslam-Stroud in a news release. “We care for our patients in their homes, schools and communities and are your community health advocates.”
