No more private budget meetings in Waterloo

Waterloo Councillor Bob Mavin was pleased with Mayor Dave Jaworsky’s decision to reverse the closed door policy.

Mavin brought the meetings to light earlier this month, after councillors were instructed to have private sit-downs with staff members to get their questions answered about the 2015 budget.

“I think all budget processes should be open and transparent, and that’s what we’re doing” says Councillor Bob Mavin. “Not that they were terrible before. The intentions were extremely good, but the reality is, when does the public participate, and let’s keep them as open as possible.”

In addition to nixing the closed door meetings, Mayor Jaworsky invited members of the public to come forward if they have any questions about the budget process and he’s hopeful more people will come forward with questions ahead of the budget.

“With our budget 2015 being so important to the city, I really hope citizens will come out or have gone online to get the information” says Mayor Dave Jaworsky. “And that they’ll come out and ask some questions or at least hear what we have to say.”
