Federal court upholds cabinet order to strip Waterloo’s Oberlander of citizenship

The Federal Court has upheld a federal cabinet order to strip a Waterloo man of his citizenship for the third time.

The latest ruling against Helmut Oberlander is the latest in a string of moves dating back 20 years.

The 90-year-old has long maintained he did not lie about his role with the Nazis in order to get into Canada.

He served as an interpreter who fought for Germany during the Second World War.

In his ruling, Justice James Russell writes that Oberlander was present when hundreds of Jews were rounded up to be murdered in Rostov, Ukraine in 1942.

Russell went on to say, that “By acting as an interpreter in this way, (Oberlander) was vital to the purposes of Ek 10a because he assisted in identifying who should be eliminated.”
