AUDIO: It’s Don Cameron Potato Night at The Aud

Bring your buds and some spuds to tonight’s Kitchener Rangers game.

It’s Don Cameron Potato Night in support of the House of Friendship. The potatoes and cash collected before the game will go to the February Potato Blitz.

The Rangers host Kingston. The pre-game show starts at 7pm on 570 News.

Don Cameron Potato Night started when fellow PEI native Darcy Harris played on the Rangers. Harris’ family owned a potato farm there. They sent 1,000 pounds of potatoes to Kitchener that year.

Cameron, the voice of the Kitchener Rangers on 570 News, says the House of Friendship goes through approximately 300,000 pounds of potatoes each year.

“One of the things that I like about it is just the involvement with the people coming to the games, many of them do remember to bring a bag of potatoes…That’s kind of a little bit of an inconvenience, bring a bag of potatoes to a hockey game and don’t throw them on the ice.”

“…The people of Kitchener, Waterloo and surrounding area are very generous people.” added Cameron

John Neufeld, Executive Director of the House of Friendship, tells us why the potato was chosen for the campaign. “A lot of us just growing up, that’s sort of a staple, it’s a very nourishing food to have.”

There’s a social media component to this year’s February Potato Blitz as well. Pfenning Organics will donate a three pound bag of potatoes for every #SpuddyUnselfie shared with @HOFKW (House of Friendship) on Twitter.

On Saturday, February 7th, 26 area grocery stores will participate in the Super Market Blitz, where donations of potatoes will be accepted. The Community Potato Lunch then takes place Friday, February 27th, from 12 to 1pm at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Kitchener. The lunch is free, but donations are welcome.
