Ottawa standoff suspect charged in Nova Scotia dangerous chemical probe

The man who was arrested in the Ottawa hotel standoff on Wednesday is facing charges in a dangerous chemical investigation in Nova Scotia.

RCMP in Nova Scotia have charged Christopher Phillips, 42, with one count of threatening police with bodily harm or death and one of possessing a weapon (osmium tetroxide).

According to documents, the charges relate to events between Boxing Day and up until Wednesday.

Phillips was wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant after police in Nova Scotia found a large quantity of chemicals inside Halifax-area homes.

The chemist was arrested by Ottawa police on Wednesday, following a 10-hour standoff at the Chimo Hotel in the east end of Ottawa.

The hazmat team scoured his sixth-floor room and his vehicle, but did not find anything dangerous.

Mounties from Nova Scotia are expected in Ottawa on Thursday to interview Phillips.

So far, no charges have been laid by police in Ottawa. Police said they have no indication that he will be charged in Ottawa.

Meanwhile, the president of MedSleep issued a statement earlier on Thursday to say that Phillips does not work for its network of sleep disorder clinics.

Phillips’s LinkedIn profile lists him as the manager of Neurology and Sleep Medicine Associates Inc. in the Halifax area.
