Five more watermain breaks in Kitchener; repairs could cost almost $75,000

The amount of watermain breaks in Kitchener is up again; Tuesday alone, five more burst.

They were on Woodhaven, Avalon, Shadywood, Nelson and Brick Streets.

Wally Malcolm is the Director with Kitchener Utilities. In an interview with 570 News he that the price-tag for the repairs is steep.

We are averaging about $10,000 to $15,000 per main break. So this would cost us $50,000 to $75,000.

Malcolm says these breaks all are another case of the pipes just not lasting their intended lifespan of 80 years.

These particular watermains were installed between 1952 and 1964 and were all under what is called the “yellow light category.”

There is a more urgent category as well, which is red light. That means the repairs are urgent with a best case scenariou, need to be completed within the next three years.

The total cost to fix the necessary framework under that heading is estimated at $19 million dollars.
