Region of Waterloo to discuss tax increase of 2.83%

The Region of Waterloo will take a look at their 2015 budget this Wednesday, January 21st.

They’re looking at a proposed tax hike of 2.83% and of that percentage, 0.7% is allotted for Waterloo Regional Police.

If approved, that budget would mean an extra $51 for the average homeowner.

Last year, the Region of Waterloo brought in a tax increase of 1.86%,

“The big expenditures are of course are the LRT, which we are currently paying for. We borrowed money for that, so that has an impact on our budget next year” says Sean Strickland, Regional Councillor. “Also the continued investment in our roads budget. That is accommodated for in our budget plans for 2015 as well. Mostly infrastructure expenditures, transit, LRT, roads, those are the big pressures on our budget.”

The public is invited to come out this coming Wednesday, and give their input.

The budget is expected to be finalized on March 4th.
