Sir John A. Macdonald sculpture to be unveiled at tonight’s Rangers game

A sculpture of Canada’s first prime minister will be unveiled tonight at The Aud when the Kitchener Rangers host the Bulls.

The cast bronze sculpture of Sir John A. Macdonald will help celebrate the Canadian figure’s 200th birthday and it’s being recognized at all OHL games throughout this weekend.

It’s all part of “The Statue Project” which is aiming to place sculptures of all of Canada’s prime ministers in a Waterloo Region location as part of the 150th Canadian birthday in 2017.

“There’s probably no more iconic figure, in terms of our leadership, than John A Macdonald” says Jim Rodger, Co-Coordinator of “The Statue Project.” He’s the man who had the vision for the country, and he’s the fellow who brought everybody together in order to create it, so we thought he would be an excellent person to start and to visualize for this project.”

The statue depicts Canada’s first prime minister pausing during the time of Confederation, flanked by two 19th century dining chairs, in the hopes of sitting down with others for a discussion about the country.

Local artist, Ruth Abernathy, wanted to use the piece as a conversation starter, adding that Macdonald is keen to hear thoughts from collected guests.

The statue will remain at the Aud for the month of January and then will be taken to THEMUSEUM in Kitchener until a permanent location on Canada Day.
