Difficulty accessing doctors after hours, despite progress in doctor shortage

It appears the doctor shortage in Waterloo Region is easing, but people are still finding it hard to access doctors after hours.

A new report shows 94.3% of people in Waterloo and Wellington Regions reported having a primary care provider last year.

However over 60% of people said they had trouble seeing a doctor in the evening or on weekends.

Officials with the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network say they’re working to bring doctors together to provide care outside of typical working hours.

I’ve heard great feedback from residents in being able to get a new primary care provider quickly” says Connie Macdonald, Spokesperson for the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network. “For anyone who is perhaps struggling, or hasn’t been able to find one, they should call the health care connect program and work with them to find one.”

The report showed that 4 out of 5 people reported that they’re happy with their current care provider.
