Report shows Waterloo Region is last when it comes to ambulance availability

A new report shows Waterloo Region’s ambulance availability ranked last in 14 different communities in ontario.

The report by the Ontario Municipal Benchmarking Initiative, found the region provided around 206 ambulance hours for every 1,000 people in the region last year.

However, officials say it’s actually good news since calls for an ambulance are low, therefore the service isn’t needed as often.

“Our demand is among the lowest in terms of 63 calls per 1,000 people in Ontario” says Sean Strickland, Regional Councillor. “Subsequently, and it makes sense that our ambulance hours would be a little less than the median too.”

Strickland adds that one of the big factors is geography and size, since ambulances also service townships.

The region also ranks 5th when it comes to cost to provide an hour of ambulance service which comes at a price of $202 dollars.
