Jesus the homeless sculpture unveiled at St. Andrew’s presbyterian church

Local artist Tim Schmalz unveiled his famous “Jesus the homeless” sculpture in Kitchener today.

The life size piece represents Jesus as a beggar and is now installed in front of st. Andrew’s Presbyterian church.

Schmalz spoke with 570 News.

“They thought that the sculpture expressed their values and wanted to portray that to the city of Kitchener. hopefully it will be a reminder to people that we should be kind to the marginalized in our society.”

Schmalz says the piece is a visual translation from the bible where Jesus stated whenever you help marginalized people, you help him.

“You can’t see the face of Jesus unless you get down on your hands and knees which is kind of symbolic. He becomes every man in a sense because its not your usual representation of him.”

Similar pieces can be found in Ottawa, Toronto, Rome and soon be London, England.

He adds the most notable sculpture is in downtown Rome at the oldest hospital in the world.

St. Michael’s church in Waterloo will also be installing the “Jesus the homeless” sculpture.
