Judge convicts MP Dean Del Mastro on campaign overspending charges

Former Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro has been found guilty on all counts at his election overspending trial.

The now-Independent MP, once the Harper government’s point man on defending the Tories against charges of voter fraud, was charged with overspending during the 2008 federal election campaign.

He was also charged with failing to report a personal contribution of $21,000 to his own campaign and knowingly submitting a falsified document.

Justice Lisa Cameron says she had concerns about the credibility of Del Mastro’s evidence, saying that at times, the way in which he testified led her “to believe he was avoiding the truth.”

Cameron says he occasionally did not answer questions put to him in cross-examination and he frequently obfuscated the evidence, leading her to reject his evidence on key issues.

Del Mastro sat with his hands folded in his lap and a serious look on his face as the judgement was delivered in a courtroom in Lindsay, Ont.
