Local businesses concerned about LRT construction

Some Kitchener businesses say they are just receiving detailed information on how the LRT will affect their storefronts.  Meanwhile the Region says property owners have been kept in the loop the entire time.

Justin Kozak is owner of Too Nice to Slice & Icing Inspirations and leases his business property.  He says he just received the Expropriation Information Sheet outlining  the process of purchasing land from private property owners.

He finds the timing suspicious adding the notices are dated October 24th but were only handed out the on the 28th, the day after the election.

Debra Arnold is with Legal Services for the Region.

She says building owners were contacted long before these latest notices were issued. She adds talks with property owners have been held since the beginning of the project and have present plans that included drawings so owners could see how they would be affected.

Kozack says he is worried how customers will get to him while construction is underway and says some neighboring businesses will have to close up shop or move.

Construction on the ION is expected to be complete in late 2017.
