Seiling and Craig back, Vrbanovic and Jaworsky in

Ken Seiling will be back for another term as Chair of the Region of Waterloo. Seiling, who has been in office since the late 1970’s, finished with almost 64,000 votes. Jay Aissa finished a distant second with over 25,000. “I’ve always had lots of support, but this is probably the most aggressive campaign we’ve had, so we had to call on the community and we put a call out to the community and they just arrived.” said Seiling

There will also be new mayors in Kitchener and Waterloo as both Carl Zehr and Brenda Halloran decided not to seek
re-election.

In Kitchener, Berry Vrbanovic is Mayor-Elect. Vrbanovic received over 61-per cent of the vote, while Dan Glenn-Graham received almost 27-per cent. “I stand before you humbled by the unwavering support you and so many others in our community have shown me…” Vrbanovic told supporters at his victory party on Monday night.

Dave Jaworsky also won by a wide margin in Waterloo. He defeated Erika Traub by over 7,800 votes. “…I’m going to be taking the baton from Mayor Halloran and moving us forward on a plan towards rebuilding prosperity in Waterloo.” said Jaworsky.

Doug Craig will be back for another term as Mayor of Cambridge. Craig received 53-per cent of the vote, Linda Whetham finished a distant second. “The city is changing and I think what it showed in this election is the city is changing and we’re going into a new era here…” said Craig.

Some new faces will serve as mayors in some of the townships:

    • Todd Cowan has been ousted in Woolwich, losing to Sandy Shantz
  • Sue Foxton is the new mayor of North Dumfries
  • Joe Nowak is the new mayor of Wellesley Township
  • Les Armstrong has won re-election in Wilmot

Among some of the other notable results from the election. Longtime former MP Karen Redman has secured a seat as a regional councillor. Joining her is former local MPP Wayne Wettlaufer.

In Cambridge, city councillor Rick Cowsill lost his seat to Mike Devine. And even though she withdrew from the campaign a few weeks ago, Jane Brewer still received well over 4,000 votes for a regional council seat.
