Ottawa gunman was not on RCMP’s list of 90 high-risk travellers

R-C-M-P Commissioner Bob Paulson says the gunman in Wednesday’s attacks in Ottawa was not on the Mounties’ watch list of potential high-risk travellers.

Paulson also says there are no apparent links between Michael Zehaf-Bibeau and the man who ran down two Canadian soldiers in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec on Monday.

People at the Ottawa shelter where Zehaf-Bibeau had been staying say he ranted at length about how much he hated Canada.

According to one resident, he was furious about failing to get a passport to leave the country and wanted to go to Syria.

Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau is assuring residents that the city is safe.

Meanwhile, House of Commons Speaker Andrew Scheer has ordered a comprehensive review of Parliament Hill security after the attack.

Scheer says parliamentary systems and procedures will be examined to identify any needed improvements.

The Speaker says Canadians will rightly ask how the man, who shot a soldier Wednesday at the National War Memorial, could have made it on to the Hill with a rifle.
