New playground for Albert Street Regional housing community

Local residents, churches and regional staff have been fundraising for a new playground at the Albert Street Regional housing community in Waterloo.

The official unveiling is taking place today from 4 to 6pm and the public is welcome to attend.

Director of Housing for the Region of Waterloo, Deb Schlicter says there was a huge need for it.

“The previous playground was basically worn out from use. There are lots of children in that area so we wanted to make sure the playground was safe and a good place to play.”

Earthscape, an Elmira-based playground building company, donated their design time to the process. Inspired by the nearby railway tracks, the equipment features wooden train tracks, a red silo, climbing structures and a decommissioned train.

Community youth held a local fundraiser and volunteers sourced $60,000 for the project, which came to a value of $80,000.
