World Alzheimer’s Day

There are an estimated 500,000 people living with Alzheimer’s in Canada.

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day and Waterloo Home Instead Senior Care are inviting families in the region to share the gift of memory through the creation of a Memory Box.

Kathleen Needles is the Community Service Representative with Home Instead and tells 570 News the box is just one tool to help capture memories.

“They can be brought back to mind through touch, smell, and visual. So the Memory Box can be a collection of items that help people to recall, remember, and talk about memories they have.”

She also says it can help improve someone’s quality of life by redirecting them back to a happier time.

“A memory box can be something to help redirect someone to a more positive place and take away some of those anxieties.”

Needles explains adding photos, diaries or letters to the box is a great way to create positive memories.

“The visual effects of looking at those things bring people to a difference time in their life where maybe they are not living in a residence or living at home with around the clock care. It takes them to a place where maybe they had a little more control over their life.”

Needles also recommends attending workshops or participating in live chats to aid in the caring of family members living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.
