Prince Edward makes final stop on Saskatchewan trip with visit to Swift Current

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. – Premier Brad Wall says it has been great having Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, in Saskatchewan for a three-day visit.

On Friday, the prince wrapped up his brief trip to the province in Swift Current, where he lunched with Wall, posed for pictures during a walkabout, planted a couple of trees, toured an RCMP detachment and attended the opening of a new school.

Wall tells radio station CKSW says it was nice that Edward’s visit coincided with Swift Current’s centennial year.

He says both the tree planting and the school opening will provide great memories for the children who took part.

Earlier in the day, the prince was in Saskatoon where he unveiled a monument honouring the partnership between British and aboriginal forces in the War of 1812.

The monument features a six-metre-high teepee with bronze poles and four figures inside.

In Swift Current, Joan Spencer said she was eager for a chance to meet the prince, saying she has followed the Royal Family since she was a teenager and has already managed to see the Queen and Princes Charles and Andrew.

“I think it was 1987, it was in Winnipeg. My husband and I were invited to have dinner with the Queen,” she said. “It was very exciting and I got a picture of her walking up the aisle and she smiled right at me.”

At All Saints Catholic and Ecole Centennial School, the prince asked the students to take care of the trees he helped plant.

During his visit to the province, the prince also made stops in Regina and Moose Jaw.
