K-W Oktoberfest named #1 Bavarian festival in the world outside of Germany

National Geographic has given a big honour to a big event that gets underway in 25 days in Kitchener Waterloo.

The magazine as named the Kitchener Waterloo Oktoberfest, the number 1 Bavarian festival in the world.

An article was published in the magazines book “Four Seasons of Travel”.

It names the top 10 Oktoberfests, outside of Germany and our very own tops the list.

The article says visitors can expect an authentic taste of Germany from the city that was named Berlin until 1916.

Also commenting on the merriment pouring from Kitchener’s festhalls into steins, onto plates and on the dance floors.

President of Kitchener Waterloo Oktoberfest Harry Vogt says one of the things that sets us apart is the Thanksgiving Day parade, with thousands lining the streets and even more watching from home.

National Geographic also points out the numerous family friendly events over the course of the 8 day festival.

Vogt says with more then 40 events, they are more then just a beer festival.

There are several new events this year including Oktoberlicious, a tasting event and a human fooseball game. A special guest will also be returning. Tante Frieda will join her love Onkel Hans.

Other cities on the top ten list include Cincinnati and Columbus Ohio, Port Elizabeth South Africa, Hong Kong China and Dubai United Arab Emirates.
