Today marks World Suicide Prevention Day

Today, Sept. 10th, marks World Suicide Prevention Day.

The Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council is holding a Community Butterfly Release goes at 6pm at Kitchener City Hall. Other events are planned in the afternoon including a bbq, talks and information booths.

Stats show some 4000 Canadians die by suicide every year. Suicide is the second-most common cause of death among young people.

This spring, local services launched  “Here 24/7”  –  A single access point to the entire mental health, addictions and crisis sector in Waterloo Region, as well as Wellington and Dufferin counties.

The head of the WRSPC, Tana Nash says they have found that the demand for calls has been much greater than local officials were expecting and there are still waiting lists for supports.

Devin lost his wife Johanna two years ago, and says there’s been some great support locally to help him since then. He says there is hope.
