U-W grad. killed in Toronto hit and run

After a tragic hit-and-run crash on Saturday in Toronto, friends of victim Munyaradzi Sithole are trying to send his body back to his family in Zimbabwe.

“Munya” was a University of Waterloo graduate and was celebrating his 31st birthday when the collision occurred.

Vee Chakabveyo is one of the many people trying to raise $30,000 to help with the costs of the burial and transportation of the body.

She tells 570 news donations have been coming in from across southern Ontario, including donations from businesses, friends, and the Zimbabwean community.

“The family will be able to have a bit of closure…it’s really tough for the family, and they are not in a position to be able to do this by themselves – that is why they need everyone’s help, that is why we are doing this.”

All of Munya’s family is in Zimbabwe, and according to Chakabveyo he was always sending money to his parents and four siblings, whom he communicated with regularly.

“Not only did he look out for his family, despite the fact that he was a student, but he looked out for other students as well.”

Chakabveyo says he will be remembered as a happy and kind person.

“His friends, some from the University of Waterloo, everybody was so taken aback, because he was always there, his smile, his laughter…he would just always make people happy when he was around.”

Donations can be made here.
