Long weekend safety top priority for regional police

The last long weekend of summer is upon us, and Regional Police have some advice to pass along to those hitting the road and waterways.

Police are asking everyone to give themselves enough time to get to where they need to go.

“We know that from our own experiences and our statistics that we’ve collected that people sometimes make irrational decisions about their driving when they feel rushed” says spokesperson Olaf Heinzel. “One of the best things they can do is leave themselves enough time so they don’t feel rushed when they encounter situations such as traffic jams or collisions that would cause them to slow down and take detours.”

Over the Labour Day weekend last year, a total of 96 speeding charges were laid.

Officers will be on the look-out for aggressive, distracted and impaired drivers as well.

Officials are warning that the same rules apply to boating, meaning it’s important to be sober, wear a life jacket and have the correct amount of people on board. If you’re at the beach, parents are reminded to maintain constant supervision of children in the water.
