LRT ground breaking set for 11am

Today marks the beginning of a project that will shape the region’s future for years to come.

Regional officials and other dignitaries will be celebrating the ground breaking of the ION project at 11am at the
Dutton Drive train yard in Waterloo.

Among those expected at the ceremony include Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Steven Del Duca, Kitchener-Waterloo MP Peter Braid as well as Regional Chair Ken Seiling.

Director of Rapid Transit, Darshpreet Bhatti says construction at that location is the top priority.

“The yard is the critical component…We have to make sure the construction of that facility progresses before anything else can occur, because in the long run that’s where the vehicles will be stored, maintained and operated.”

570 News will have a reporter at the ceremony.
